Next Meeting - Tuesday August 20, 2019, on the Mezz at Festival Foods, at 11:30 AM as usual. This is our Program Meeting for August, and he speaker will be Bill Clausius, (27-D1 LCIF chair and 27-D1 2VDG) who will tell us about Lions Clubs International Foundation' new Campaign 100. From time to time Lions International makes an all-out effort to raise money for the Foundation, to finance our world-wide service work. This looks like one of those, but since the Editor does not sit in any of the councils of power, we will find out about it from someone who does. The Editor can recall an emotional scene at the International Convention in Minneapolis about 1983, where the International Chair for the then-current campaign was canvassing the house for pledges. Delegates from small, and sometimes poor (think Bangladesh in those days) Districts made ambitious commitments towards the goal which would require a lot of effort. As the score crept up, by no coincidence, the USA came last, and the goal was surpassed. If you believed in Lion Service, it was an impressive moment, and what's more, we eventually raised more than the pledged total. Now we get to do it again.

At our last meeting, an important piece of business was transacted. To facilitate better attendance, our Business Meeting on the first Tuesday of each month and our Board of Directors Meeting, previously held on the fourth Tuesday, have been combined by Board action. The first Tuesday of each month will now see the MCLC Board of Directors and Regular Meetings held jointly. All members should attend, and Board business will be conducted as one section of the general activities. Director's meetings have always been open to any member, so this will reduce the time commitment for those who hold Board seats.

There was a general discussion about membership. We need to do more in this area, obviously, but the question is, How? We need to identify prospects who have the time and ability to contribute to our service. Increasing our visibility as a Club would help, and there are resources from state and national levels that need to be consulted. Current members, please share things about finding and recruiting new members at meetings.

We are looking at ways and places to conduct another Bags Tournament, and a raffle.

Mike explained his new automated blood-sugar monitor for diabetes … syncs with cell phone and recommends amount of insulin to inject.

Madison-Monona Lionesses apparently got a Bus Stuffed, and we may hear more about that. Projects increase visibility - we need more of them.

An echo from the past has been heard. The UW Arboretum was fixing up some of its paths and boardwalks and found a plaque noting that our Club built some of them, in 1999. A little memory-searching turned up the fact that CRAIG BUTLER was the Chairman of that project, and the Editor remembered that JABO JABLONIC, HAL OTTERBACK and probably DALE ST. JOHN were principal participants. Hopefully we can get CRAIG to reminisce at one of our meetings - somebody benefitted from our Club's service and we can be glad about that, but we probably don't have enough amateur craftspersons now to do it again.
