Next Meeting - Tuesday, Oct. 2, on the Mezz at Festival Foods, at 11:30 AM as usual. This is our business meeting for October, and the weather and the calendar agree that Summer is over and Fall is here. Time to shake off the summer lassitude and get to the Lions Meeting!

Our first announcement for this Tale is a sad one. Lion WALT PRIDHAM, a member for almost 37 years, passed away on Sept.18. WALT was an active member, on hand to help when projects were going on and generous with financial support. He continued to lend support with his presence at meetings even when he couldn't hear most of what was going on, and his pleasant greetings and smiling face will be greatly missed. The Memorial Service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Saturday, October 13 at 2pm following visitation at 1pm.

There will be business, for sure, at the next meeting. Reports on the USA-Canada Forum, and other assorted meetings at various levels, plans for the next Bags Tournament, further info on other service prospects. There will be one extremely important formality. Lion JODI BURMESTER, having completed her year as District Governor and stepped up to the position of Chairman of the Council of Governors, has announced her candidacy for International Director. It requires the formal endorsement of our Club, which we will provide at this next meeting. The vote for the International Director candidate will be at the District 27 (State) Convention in May of 2019.

A little explanation of terminology: The State of Wisconsin has the same borders as Lions International District 27. Because the two areas are identical, the expressions “Wisconsin Lions State Convention” and “Lions Multiple District 27 Convention” are used interchangeably here. That is not true in other parts of the world, where a single “Multiple District” may contain areas from more than one state, and in some places, more than one country.

At our last meeting, Dr. Sri Vasudevan, Project Chairman for LCIF Grant for Childhood Cancer, gave us the following information, as reported by Pres. KEVIN.

Why childhood cancer?
• Every 2 minutes, a child is diagnosed with cancer somewhere in the world
• 1 in 285 children in the US are diagnosed with cancer before the age of 20
• ? of children treated for cancer will suffer with long term health issues

Unique Aspects
• Children are NOT small adults and the cancer they develop is not that same disease as adults. Many of these cancers have different biology and some are more aggressive.
• Many children cannot survive the treatment and doses that adults receive for their cancer type.
• Childhood cancer is the leading disease related to death in children.

Background Treatment Facts
• Each year over 250,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with cancer.
• Children with cancers are not treatable with traditional treatments, and require new and innovative therapies that are less 'damaging than current therapies'.
• Cellular therapies
      • The most exciting new treatments for children with cancer at this time.
      • Current therapies such as chemotherapy comes with elevated risk of heart issues, deafness, long term learning issues and secondary cancers.
      • MCW/CHW are at the forefront of this effort in exploring cellular therapy against variety of cancers that will allow more children with leukemia to be cured, when other options have failed.

Car T-Cell Therapy: How It Works
• It uses the body's own immune system to fight cancer.       • Remove immune cells called T cells from a patient's blood.
      • Genetically alter the cells in a lab to contain certain proteins.
      • Inject cells back into the patient.
      • Modified proteins help immune cells find and kill cancer cells.

LCIF Standard Grant for Humanitarian Services
• Partnered with MACC Fund
      • Aaron Rodgers' efforts have helped raise funds for MACC.

Flow Cytometer
