Our next meeting will be Tuesday, Nov.21, up on the Mezz at Festival Foods, on East Washington Ave. between Livingston and Patterson, at 11:30. It is a Program Meeting, and GAIL STIRR is the Program Host. She will introduce:

Professor Sheila Reaves, Department of Life Sciences Communication, UW-Madison
Topic: Understanding the Art of Vision

Professor Reaves specializes in visual communication and is interested in how neuroscience supports interdisciplinary theories of visual imagery used in science communication and visual messages.

The Editor thinks this is “a picture is worth a thousand words.” You should be at the meeting to find out. Certainly the current generation seems to use images more than voice to communicate, judging by the smartphone use you see everywhere. They aren't talking to them, or listening to them, they're staring at them and poking them.

Following is a report of our last Business Meeting, compiled by Ace Reporter SCOTT GROVER:

Vp DALE BURMESTER started our November 7 “business” meeting with words of inspiration from C. S. Lewis - “Day by day, nothing changes. But when you look back, everything is different.”

We heard a report about our (very) recent Bags Tournament, in which 24 teams competed for glory and cash. One lesson learned - the loser bracket takes forever. We are faced with a serious need for board storage. Will we have to look for rental storage? [Post Script - faced with no volunteers, MCLC has indeed rented a short-term storage unit. This will get expensive. Hint, hint.] Multiple group representatives expressed interest in wanting to host a tourney. DALE and KEVIN were recognized for putting in a massive amount of work prior to the tourney, which made Saturday much smoother.

ADAM told us that a Low Vision Magnifier would be delivered following the meeting. The recipient is an 84 year old Fitchburg woman, who is very active and needs a portable magnifier. Concern was expressed that the magnifier should be returned to either the Council of the Blind or our club when the recipient no longer has a need for it.

At the recent Zone Meeting, MCLC received a Centennial Club award, as well as Centennial pins for individuals.

We were reminded that PID Karla Harris recently passed away on November 1. There will be a celebration of life on November 10 in Milwaukee. [This reporter can remember when celebrations of life were called wakes.]

Holiday Greetings!

We were reminded that the MCLC Holiday Party will be December 4, starting at 5:30, at Angelo's, on Monona Drive. Including Lionistic birthday celebrations. Bring a gift.

Holiday Greetings!

There will be a number of children's vision screenings in Milton in November. [Your reporter participated in one of the screenings, where 40 sixth graders were screened in less that two hours. Four were referred.]

Our fearless Secretary JOHN distributed International awards, to MIKE, PHIL, and the absent JODI. Our busy District Governor was recently in Green Bay, and will soon be in Manitowoc, both for district conventions. JOHN also reminded us about the Empty Stocking Club event on December 11-13 at the Alliant Energy Center. Volunteers are welcome and will be rewarded with that good feeling for doing good works. Over $50,000 worth of toys were given last year.

There will be a Club Quality Initiative, designed to show us how to improve our club. Key phrase is “Embrace Change”. (Editor - “The only thing I can tell you about tomorrow is that it will be different from today, and you won't like it any better.”)
