Next Up - Tuesday, Oct. 5 - PP JODI BURMESTER will introduce Fran Pulio, Community Relations Manager for Monona Terrace, who will tell us about the multitude of free public offerings that are taking place at Monona Terrace, which is a "Community and Convention Center." Ms. Pulio has degrees in orchestral flute performance and an MBA, so she has a background in lots of things that go on there, mostly without our knowledge. Those gaps are about to be filled in. Program Chairperson MICHELLE VETTERKIND arranged the program, but she has entered upon her usual Fall Frenzied Travel season, and we won't even know for sure which continent, let alone which city, she will be in for the next couple of months.

At the last meeting, it was revealed, in connection with the TT's drawing, that winning the Science Fair was not among PP LINDA BERGREN'S lifetime achievements - she took third. The Editor also submitted a list of 5 events: 1) Present at signing of peace treaty ending WWII with Japan; 2) Present when Eisenhower announced Presidential campaign; 3) Served in the USAF, retiring as Captain; 4) Attended same HS and Univ. as wife, sang in same concert and played in same piano recital as children but did not know each other until after UW; 5) Present at Pres. Harry Truman's address to Joint Session of Congress. Don't know if anyone got it right, because the Peace Treaty was not in Tokyo Bay when I was 15 years old, it was signed several years later in the San Francisco Opera House and I was there. I missed Eisenhower's speech, though - I was in Denver, and invited as a service member, but didn't go. One blown opportunity of a lifetime! Slate of entrants duly created, the TT drew for the Packer tickets and WALT PRIDHAM won.

Program speakers, introduced by Pres. JIM, were Ed Fink and Mary Van Hout of Madison West Rotary, describing their Orphan Train project, which links groups here with orphanages in Eastern Europe that desperately need help even for basic services. This was one of the earliest cooperative projects between Lions and Rotary, and JIM and his family have done several vision screening missions. Rotary brings several orphanage directors and "intermediaries" (people in the orphanage's area who serve as translators and assist with the delivery of, and accounting for, aid that is sent,) to Mooseheart, IL for training and familiarization with American methods. The project has aided orphanages all over the world, including Africa, China and Latin America.

The business portion of our meeting began with LINDA BERGREN leading the song and DALE MUELLER offering an appropriate invocation. SCOTT GROVER indicated that a few more good people were needed for theFootball Concessions stand, and that the schedule for the Kohl Center (it's warm in there) stand for the basketball season was now posted on the web, with spaces for volunteers to fill. The stores are setting up their Christmas displays, and not to be outdone, LINDA BERGREN has laid out our Christmas display - the famous Holida Treat and Nut Sale!. Merchandise is mostly the same as last year - Mixed Nuts, Cashews, Almonds, Trail Mix, Pralines, Almond/Cranberry/Granola Mix, Chocolate Cranberries, Peanuts, Almonds, Raisins, LINDA's FAMOUS MALTED MILK BALLS, and our ever-popular Benson's Fruit Cakes in 1 lb. and1½ lb. sizes. Prices are $6 USD to $10 USD, and order blanks are available now. This is a traditional fundraiser for our Club, so treat your family and friends, and offer others the chance to do the same. See LINDA for info and order blanks! She's also helping out Muscular Dystrophy's fundraising, and needs donation pledges to get her out of "Jail."

The annual Service Club Luncheon will be Nov. 17 at the Alliant Center.

JIM KEMMETER reported that we were a little over half way through our Eye Transport month, and had anticipated 30+ missions. There's always room for more on the list of Transporters, and this is a vital Lion Service that you get to do first-hand, hands on. See JIM to volunteer for future missions, many of which are now local, and most only 30 miles or so. "Because of what I do today, someone will see tomorrow!"

Funds collected by our TailTwister in October will be sent to LCIF for a specific donation to flood relief in Pakistan. Your generosity will go to aid those who have lost everything in this disaster.

Pres. JIM finished up the first meeting under the new schedule exactly on time!
