Tuesday, October 18, our speaker will be local author Art Rathburn. He has written about the experiences of Japanese Americans and German Americans during WWII. LINDA BERGREN is the Program Host.

At our last meeting, JODI BURMESTER introduced UW Volleyball Coach Pete Waite, and Taylor Reineke, one of his players. She exemplifies the modern Big 10 volleyball player — 6 feet tall or above, can touch a spot 10" 1' off the floor, played volleyball on several levels before she got to college, and trains and competes almost the year around, except for a short vacation in January. The regular season is in the Fall, and they also can play a few matches during a short Spring season. In between, training, practice (some with coaches, some without) and informal sand volleyball in the Summer. The regular season runs from September to November, and there are some big matches coming up here at the Field House. Tickets at the door or by the season, and your editor can testify they're some of the best entertainment values in town. Crowds are now around 4000, but there's room for nearly 10,000 in the Field House, so you should go. Take your spouse, daughter or granddaughter. Our speakers kindly donated some tickets, and CHRIS WILLS was the high bidder in the TT's auction for four of them.

President CHUCK BASFORD opened the meeting, OTTO FESTGE, back from whatever ailed him, led the song with both arms once again, and LINDA BERGREN gave the invocation. MELISSA NOVINSKI brought Gary Paul as a guest, and we were pleased to note that JIM BRADLEY walked to and from his office to the meeting. Gives new meaning to the phrase "up and running!"

JODI BURMESTER says the District will hold a Leadership Training session at the McFarland Community Center (in the Village Hall) on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 8:16 to 3:00. Topics and presentations are, like other Leadership meetings, very useful both for Lion activities and professional and personal life. Cost is $20, including lunch, and it is an opportunity to learn more about both Lions and general leadership skills. See JODI to participate.

Our Club received about $300 in personal donations from members for Hurricane Relief, and we rounded it up to $1,000 from our service funds and sent it to LCIF. We will have a Melvin Jones Fellowship to present as a result, and the satisfaction in knowing once again that we have served people in need of help.

President CHUCK attended the USA-Canada Forum, and reported that he found what all of us who have gone to a Forum have said — the programs and presentations are at a very high level of skill, professionalism and knowledge, and the information received is useful both in Lion activities and in everyday life. You can help your career and yourself, as well as your Club, and it is well worth the time and effort to attend. CHUCK had his picture taken with International President Ashok Mehta, and one of the ideas he brought back is for a new fund raiser, collecting used computer inkjet printer cartridges and used toner cartridges from laser printers and copiers. We can get free collection boxes and the recycling company will pay for the shipping, plus $1.00 to $2.50 for each recyclable cartridge. Start thinking where you might be able to place a box. There's more information.

MELISSA NOVINSKI noted that our Raffle is in full swing, and there is only one more meeting before the drawing. Get your tickets sold, and stubs and money turned in. She and DON NEVIASER have tickets. PHIL STOWITTS has the Bucky Books-$35.00 is a great value, and we make $12.00 each.

Al "MR.G" GOLDSTEIN has invited all MCLC members to lunch at the Beth El Temple on November 8. This will be a special extra meeting, and the speaker will be their new Rabbi. They need a head count — let President CHUCK know that you are coming. Always a great lunch!
