New Year's Resolutions - everybody talks about them, lots of people make them, a few people even keep them. Our speaker for the next meeting, on January 4, 2005, will be the Rev. Bill Wineke, and his topic - "New Year's Resolutions." His life experiences as ordained minister, newspaper columnist and reporter, and chaplain to the Rescue Mission give him a unique viewpoint from which to comment, and we will probably hear a new twist on an old story. Certainly an interesting start to a new year.

We wound up the old year with a rousing program given by the East High School Swing Choir. The group of 35 plus put on a well-rehearsed, lively and enthusiastic program of songs and dances. The large number of choir members shows that the program is popular with the students, and the polished performance of both music and choreography proves that they put in a lot of time and effort to do it right. The young people obviously enjoy doing it and the audience clearly liked it. The country has a future after all! OTTO FESTGE set it up for us and introduced the group.

After the program, OTTO led us in our own singing of "America" and "Bishop" BOB BOHN, once again demonstrating the cardinal principle "be prepared" that he learned as a Boy Scout, filled in for an absent invocator with an on-the-spot invocation.

Guests introduced included Leslie Neviaser with DON, Marian Stevens with TOM, Bernie Stoudt with DAN, LINDA BERGEN brought husband David York and Michael George, and ART TAGGART brought two of his staff members, Araceli Esparzo and Jane Meyer. Nice to have a good sized group in attendance. The new, improved, and much leaner version of DENNIS URECHE also visited. He looks great!

President LINDA reported that the quickly-organized Holiday Nut and Cake sale went well, and asked that all money be turned in to her as soon as possible. She pretty much singlehandedly rescued one of the fund-raising projects we count on for our service work, and Lion members responded with a great sales effort. Surprising how many people out there still want our fruit cakes.

A few Lion Birthdays were also celebrated, thanks to President LINDA. GEORGE ALBRIGHT, MELISSA NOVINSKI, JOHN JENSON and CRAIG BUTLER were the Lions whose service anniversaries were noted, and THAYER BURNHAM, MELISSA ABBOTT (how did they do that?), JERRY MILLER and BOB BOHN were the winners of the respective gifts.

We need every Lion at our meetings. The Program Committee is working hard to bring interesting, entertaining and informative programs, enthusiasm is high, and there's a lot going on. Come and join the fun, and realize the satisfaction in participating with a good group of friends in Lion service. You can even be TailTwister For A Day if that's been your life's ambition!

Future Programs:

Richard L. Evans wrote, in 1966: "We have read somewhere a sentence which says: ‘Begin. The rest is easy.' This of course is oversimplified, but it is true that beginning is a big part of any process - good or bad. The importance of beginning, or not beginning, could scarcely be overemphasized. And one of the main things to remember when something should be done, is to begin, to move, and then to follow through.. ‘There is nothing so fatal to character,' said David Lloyd George, ‘as half-finished tasks.' ‘The greatest requirement for success,' said Roy Thomson, ‘ is a great determination to succeed.' Learning and doing are important early and late in life. ‘The great thing in this world is not so much where we are, but in what direction we are moving.' "
